August is over. It certainly feels like it outside. We’re bordering on fall weather and I’m not sure how I feel about it. I don’t think I’m quite ready to let summer go yet.

I never get tired of this though.

(this is also how I feel about fall and the fact that I’m going back to philly ;))

 

Recap – goals for august

1. HALF MARATHON – oh yes. you can read post here

2. try hot yoga – I went! only once but I went & loved it. yoga will become something I do regularly (if I keep telling myself that)

3. join gym or commit to strength training on my own – I didn’t join a gym. I really just can’t justify spending the money just so I can go to classes. I did start doing more cross training, but not as much as I want to. I give myself half credit on this one.

4. have an amazing time at HLS. Definitely. Recaps on HLS here, here & here plus my lessons learned.

August was a bit of an odd month. I talked a little bit about how weird I felt after the half marathon in this post. I’m adjusting how I think about my workouts and getting more on track.

Last night, I did my first speed workout. Speed work makes me nervous, which probably explains why I skipped it the past 2 weeks. oops.  I did  8 x400 intervals at an 8:57 pace with a 1 mile warmup &  .5 mile cool down.  It flew by!  Intervals made it go by so fast. Big fan. 

and completely unrelated but worth sharing – yesterday afternoon, I pulled this out of my desk drawer (which is always stock piled with bars, nuts, etc). I got this in my HLS swag bag and didn’t have high hopes.20110831-090320.jpgit was surprisingly delicious & chocolatey

Don’t worry. I realize its been a few days, but I did survive Irene. I was fortunate enough to have power the whole time too.

That means I laid on the couch for an entire day watching bad movies like Life as We Know It & Definitely, Maybe followed by Criminal Minds reruns (really though, I can’t get enough of Criminal Minds)

so dreamy

I went out both Friday & Saturday, didn’t work out & ate crap. awesome. nicely done alli. and on top of that, I let my apartment become a mess. Now, I’m not sure why it happens, but when my apt is a mess, I feel like my life is.

so, rather than forcing out a blog post, I needed to catch up and get my head on straight. Sunday night, I cleaned out my closet!!

and then yesterday – I forced myself to be super productive at work, ran 4 miles & cleaned my apartment. Now I can relax a bit.

All accomplished in time for the 8:30 fantasty football draft. The Women and Fed League is back for year 2 (and we’re up to 3 guys!)

Sad that I couldn’t be there in person, but facetime-ing with the NY crew was pretty hysterical.

I did zero research, but I think my team came together pretty well. (but what do I know)

wash out

today’s been a wash. I suspect tomorrow will be even worse.

I spent an entire hour at the pool yesterday.
should’ve been longer but I had things to do.
oh hello sun. I’ve missed you

things like getting my hair cut & colored. 🙂

yes I take photos in the lobby of the hair place.  smoooth.

things like treating myself to some froyo – yumm

and today I prepped for the hurricane.

and by prepped, I mean I went to CVS to get this. and some chex mix.

and approximately $17 worth of AA batteries because thats all they had left. I can recharge them? awesome. we all know I won’t actually do that.

I feel like I should be doing more than just waiting around for this mess of a hurricane.

the weather channel is getting awwwfully boring.

I really shouldn’t be complaining about boring. What am I going to do when the power actually does go out!?!

aside from reading books, I keep thinking of things (like baking) and then realize they require electricity. fail.

stay dry kids. or just stay home.

happy friday friends!

everyone preparing for Irene?! I’m not sure how I feel about this whole hurricane situation.

I did make sure I located my flashlight, candles, matches. I stocked up on food, wine, water, etc. I got a pile of books waiting for when the power goes out.

I’m really glad its not hitting until Sunday. I haven’t spent a weekend in Boston in over a month. eekk. so I’m pumped to be home.

Today is my last summer Friday, so I planned a lil extra awesomeness. I keep saying I need to do more yoga.  So given that I did buy that Groupon & hot yoga is one of my august goals, today was the day to make it happen.  I really dislike the yoga mat I have, plus it lacks a strap, which makes it quite difficult to tote around.

I went out last night and bought a new one.

I slept in a little and headed to the 9:30 hot hatha class.

serious sweat city.

75 minute class at 94 degrees. I was drenched.

and loooved it

the class felt awesome. I really need to work on my balance, but one step at time.

I can’t wait to go back.

and since its a few T stops away, Starbucks on the way home – highly necessary.

1. strangers aren’t that scary. I went into this nervous as you all know, because I’d never met anyone else that was attending. I arrived at the hotel, checked in at the front desk, and made a friend waiting for the elevator. Took a whole 5 minutes.
Nice to know that I wasn’t the only one who went without friends. So glad I went!

 

2. Dawn Jackson Blatner is the author of The Flexitarian Diet. Her message was about R.A.W. Realistic & Achievable Wellness. I know meat isn’t awesome for me, but I like it. I could never be a vegetarian, nevermind a vegan. I respect those who go down that route, but it isn’t for me. So in her words, I’m not anti-meat, I’m pro-plants. I’m intrigued, Dawn.

 

3. You don’t feel defensive unless you have something to be defensive about. – Julie

 

4. Only put things out in the world that you’re willing to stand behind. This probably isn’t something I learned, more something I was reminded of.

 

5. When dealing with negativity: Is it true? Is it kind? Is it necessary? – Heather

I like the way she phrases it. Ask yourself those 3 questions before you respond to someone who makes you feel less than warm and fuzzy. (not that I’ve had to deal with a lot of blog negativity)

 

6. If there is someone you want to meet, just do it.  I was a little shy when it came to introducing myself to many of the bloggers that I read. Why?  I’m not really sure. I thought everyone was trying to meet them and didn’t want to be annoying? It was awkward, so I avoided it?  They were busy talking to people they already knew?  Who knows.

I should’ve sucked it up and done it.  Some of them were good about talking to the newbies and some weren’t. So I just assumed they weren’t interested in meeting me.  Probably not accurate.  Thinking about it now, imagine what its like to be in a room with 200 people who know lots of details about your life and you have no idea who they are.. awkward? yeah.    So next time..

 

and one random not-so-HLS-related lesson:

7. if you open/unhook bracelets, they don’t set off the metal detector.

I’m feeling prettyyy motivated this week, my friends. Renewed desire to get my butt in gear. So I’m back on the training plan. Week 1 wasn’t so hot last week. Week 2 is going fairly well.

On the food front – preparation is everything. Having food & a plan of what to do with it is key. So I bought a container of strawberries at Whole Foods the other night, broke out my super strawberry slicer and planned out a few days worth of breakfast.

HLS Part 3 – Sunday

Saturday night was so much fun! I stayed out pretty late, having a crazy dance party with a bunch of seriously awesome bloggers.

So Sunday morning’s 8am fun run seemed awfully early. 7am wake up, not ideal.

Most of us ended up walking and talking through some of the touristy parts of Philly. Much better plan than running.

love this 🙂 rocky!I’m ashamed to say I ran the steps but I’ve never even watched the movie. alli fail. must add to movie list.

philly was fantastic. Before I knew it, it was over.

I had so much fun.

Met so many phenomenal people.

Have soo many more blogs I want to read.

and headed home feeling inspired, in blogging, in fitness, in everything..

Off to the airport & reality.
but one more cocktail first. 😉
